Choosing the Right Mahindra Tractor
Mahindra tractors bring innovative design, durable construction, and powerful reliability to agricultural and landscaping work. Tractors are just good at getting done what needs doing, and there’s no manufacturer out there with the same dedication to quality as Mahindra. That doesn’t mean just any tractor with the Mahindra stamp will do. You need the right tractor for your operation. Go too big, and you’ll have a very slow truck — too small and you’ve got a riding mower without any power. At Johnson Fleet and Farm, we’re proud of our stock of new and used Mahindra tractors. That’s why we’ve put together this short guide to help you figure out what you need and what to expect from a tractor buying experience. Read on for more information or head into one of our locations in Yulee, Fernandina Beach, and Hilliard, Florida, as well as Homerville, Georgia.
Implements
You might take a look at a tractor and already be thinking of all the utility it’s going to provide, from tillage and spreading to mowing and leveling, but all the great jobs tractors can tackle are due to the set of implements they use to transfer their power to work. When shopping for a tractor, start with what you need it to be able to do and find the matching implements. There’s no sense getting a tractor that can’t handle the implements you need! Perhaps all you want is a lawn mower capable of handling thick growth, in which case a smaller model will be fine. But if you want to pull heavy implements across a field, you’ll need something larger. Spreaders and rotary tillers are what we’re talking about here, so make sure you get something that’s built for handling the implements you need.
There are a couple common systems for transfering power to implements. When shopping for a tractor, make sure they have one of these components if you plan on using implements. Power take-off (PTO) drive shafts powers other equipment attached to your tractor, while hydraulic pumps feed energy back into the implement. If a tractor doesn’t have either of these components, there should be at least a drawbar to tow unpowered equipment. Without these systems, there’s no real way to make use of a tractor’s significant pull.
A Fit for Your Property
After figuring out what kind of implements you need, take a moment to think about the terrain you’ll be operating the tractor on. Not every tractor is suited for every property. Obstacles like trees, rocky ground, and inclines can get in the way of bigger tractors. Meanwhile, terrain that’s flat with work spread between locations might be best for a faster tractor. Whatever terrain you operate on, make sure to take into consideration this limiting factor when looking at a possible purchase.
Specifications That Matter
Horsepower is the old standby for a vehicle specification for most vehicles, from cars and trucks to motorcycles, but it’s often secondary in a tractor. Instead of picking out a model with the biggest engine and highest horsepower, look for equipment that can apply more power to the specific areas you need it. You’ll be better off with a powerful PTO and a less powerful engine than the other way around.
